Mid-20th Century Romanian Terracotta Stomna Water Jug with Feathered Slipware Decoration (1)
This beautiful, traditional Balkan (Romanian) terracotta water jug - frequently referred to as a "Stomna" - dates back to the mid-20th century. Its striking, multi-layered feathered design is achieved using a traditional slipware technique. While the vessel rotates on a potter's wheel, droplets of coloured liquid clay (slip) are applied to the surface before a tool is dragged through the wet slip to create the characteristic wave patterns. Traditionally used to store water and keep it naturally cool, the jug features a clever hollow handle that doubles as a drinking spout. Instead of pouring water from the wide main neck into a cup, you simply tilt the jug up to drink directly from this smaller opening. This vintage piece would compliment any modern home, whether used for its original purpose or repurposed as a unique floral vase.
