Description

This beautiful child's kimono originated in the Tenpo era of the Edo period. It has been repurposed into a fukusa which is a traditional wrapping cloth used for ceremonial occasions. What makes this piece truly stand out is the yuzen dyeing method. This Japanese resist dyeing technique uses rice paste to keep the dye and the illustrations separate. In this instance, the kimono has paintings of cranes which, in Japanese culture, are a symbol of longevity and good fortune. It also has a painting of a woman and child which represents compassion and the embodiment of innocence.

The kimono also has a semamori, which is a good luck symbol that was embroidered on the back to protect children from the devil. Nowadays, this repurposed fukusa would make stunning wall art for any contemporary home.

The dimensions are as follows: H - 79cm, W - 82cm.
