Originating in the Yamagata Prefecture, this fragment of Shishi-maku cloth dates to the late Edo period. This indigo-dyed fabric is hand-woven using hemp, and showcases intricate tsutsugaki resist patterns. Originally, this beautiful textile would have been used in a traditional Japanese folk performance known as Shishimai (lion dance). It is believed that this dance wards off evil spirits and acts as a form of prayer for prosperity. The evidence of its use on the stage of celebrations can be seen through the wear and tear along the bottom.
A symbol of Japan's deeply beautiful and spiritual heritage, this cloth would make a wonderful piece of wall art!
The dimensions of this are as follows: H - 81cm, W - 95cm.
