Late 18th Century Dark Lacquered Hand-painted Chinese Book Cabinet

This beautiful book cabinet originated in China within the Qing dynasty. It was handmade and hand-carved in the 18th century, and has a stunning dark lacquer finish. The cabinet has all of its original metalwork, however, it does have some age related marks and it has had some repairs overtime. 

The hand-painted illustrations are what truly showcase the quality of this piece as they are bursting with symbolism. The red flowers symbolise the longevity of life as red is seen as a lucky colour, in Chinese culture, whereas the yellow flowers represent wealth and prosperity. The grapes are associated with fertility and the gold leaf, which symbolises warmth and empathy. There is also an illustration of a Wei Qi board, which is arguably the worlds oldest board game. The grouping of all these meanings and symbols outlines the values found within Chinese culture, making this piece undeniably rich in quality and effort. 

Originally, this cabinet was used to store books. Nowadays however, it can be used as a general storage space, whilst adding a sense of rustic uniqueness to any modern home!
