Description

Here we have a striking antique, Japanese Bo Dansu, dating back to the Meiji period (1868 - 1912). Constructed by a team of three talented artisans; a carpenter, ironworkers and a lacquer worker using kiri (paulownia wood) favoured for its natural moisture - regulating and insect - repelling properties. The chest is heavily adorned with hand-forged iron fittings, practically focussing on the central bo (locking bar) which features the ivy family crest, known as the Tsuta Kamon. Historically these chests were the ultimate wedding gifts, commissioned by the brides parents, serving as a highly practical gifts and a deeply symbolic purpose as the young woman transitions into her new life. In Japanese culture ivy is a highly respected motif as the vine is resilient, clinging firmly to surfaces and growing rapidly. In traditional cabinetry, lock plates acted as regional hallmarks, the combination of the ivy adorned locking bar paired with the crane flying above a dragon on the bottom drawer (symbolising the "heaven and earth" balance) confirms that the chest was crafted in the coastal trading port of Sakata in the Yamagata prefecture. The exterior originally would have a black lacquer finish coating the timber however the Dansu has been scorched using the ancient Japanese technique called "Shou sugi ban".  This technique would have been used to preserve the chest, making it highly fire retardant as well as making the timber inedible to wood-boring pests as the act of scorching removes the natural sugars. Once the crafting process has finished the Dansu would have been sealed with either a natural plant oil or wax, leaving a beautiful, rich, multi-toned charcoal patina. The structural layout of the piece is incredibly well though through, particularly focusing on fire risk as house fires were a frequent reality. The main body features five wide, full-width drawers stacked vertically to store kimonos and other textiles alongside the safe compartment, holding personal valuables. The sturdy iron handles attached to the sides of the Dansu are called "Mochite" (carrying handles) engineered for emergency evacuation and general transportation. This stunning piece would compliment any modern home, especially repurposed as a hallway credenza or a living room accent cabinet.

The dimensions are as follows: H - 100cm  L - 86cm W - 41cm
