Description

Here we have a stunning, Japanese winnowing scoop basket dating back to the mid 1920's. The core is hand-woven from flexible split bamboo or reed which has been meticulously covered in multiple layers of traditional washi paper. Once the washi paper is applied the scoop is sealed with tannin, this treatment hardens the paper making it completely waterproof while also creating a deeply oxidised brown colour with a tough, leather-like texture. The distinct wide, U-shaped arch creates a deep black rim that tapers forward to a completely flat, open front edge. Historically, these scoops would have been used in rural communities for farm workers to scoop, move or winnow fine grain, seeds or tea leaves without loosing any product. This piece would compliment any modern home particularly repurposed as a dinning table or kitchen island centrepiece.

The dimensions are as follows: L 50cm by W 42cm by H 11cm
