These stunning pieces of paper originated in the early 20th century in Japan. The inner layers are made from recycled paper, possibly older ledgers or documents. This shows how materials were reused with care in the Meiji period. This two slot together to form one big bag. We were not able to translate it accurately, but we believe it is the name of the company or shop that distributed such bags.
Originally, they would have been used to hold Mayubukuro, which are silkworm cocoon balls. Nowadays however, they can be used as beautiful pieces of wall art.
