These gorgeous serving plates originated in China in the early 20th century. They are made from a mix of wood and copper. They have a lovely oval shape, and they all have their original lacquer and have hand-painted illustrations which are unique to each plate. Each plate also has their makers mark on the back.
Plate 1: This specific hand painted image is a Chinese symbol representing the mythical Empress of the West, Xiwangmu. She is the goddess of longevity and immortality. Around the edges there are flowers which symbolises good fortune and prosperity.
Dimensions: H - 5.5cm, D - 39.5cm, W - 26cm.
Plate 2: This hand-painted plate has a depiction of a scene from a Chinese opera. It also has representations of wealth which can be seen through the clothing and weaponry in the image.
Dimensions: H - 5.5cm, D - 36cm, W - 25cm.
Plate 3: This particular plate potentially depicts a scholar or sage writing. A sage is someone, in Chinese mythology, who possesses profound wisdom and guides others through their teachings. It also contains paintings of birds and flowers around the edges.
Dimensions: H - 4cm, D - 33.5cm, W - 19cm.
Plate 4: This plate has flowers and architectural elements which are common motifs found in Chinese art. The main image is potentially depicting a couple within their own home setting wearing traditional Chinese attire.
Dimensions: H - 5cm, D - 37.5cm, W - 24cm.
Plate 5: This painted scene has 2 figures and the larger one, with the distinctive hat, could represent an emperor or someone of high regard as the figure below is holding a fan which would have been used by servants to keep people of high authority and power cool.
Dimensions: H - 6.5cm, D - 41.5cm, W - 27cm.
Plate 6: This plate has a very simplistic image, but due to the age all we can tell is that there are 2 figures, holding items; potentially weaponry or instruments.
Dimensions: H - 7.5cm, D - 39cm, W - 26cm.
Plate 7: This plate seems to depict a scene from a Chinese opera, with two men on the floor, looking up to the women on the balcony. There are symbols of wealth which can be seen through their clothes.
Dimensions: H - 6.5cm, D - 41cm, W - 26.5cm.
