Here we have two beautiful pair of bronze Japanese vases that have been converted into lamps, dating back to the early Meji Period (1868-1912). Crafted from bronze with a rich, reddish-brown patinated finish, these pieces have a traditional baluster form featuring an elongated, flared neck that tapers inwards before swelling into a bulbous lower body. The lower body features high-relief castings of small songbirds (sparrows) landing on a blooming cherry blossom branch (Kacho-ga), creating a visual poem of pure optimism. Both cherry blossom and the sparrows have deep symbolic meaning in Japanese culture. The cherry blossom representing fleeting beauty/bittersweet awareness that nothing lasts forever and the sparrows representing happiness, luck and family prosperity. The upper neck is framed by distinct openwork handles modelled after dragons, these mythical creatures are highly valued in Japanese culture, historically pieces incorporating dragons were often produced for export or wealthy merchant families. Dragons in East Asian mythology are considered powerful, benevolent spirit guardians placed on the neck or handles of a vessel (vase) to protect the contents of the vase and the home it resides in. As you can see this pair of matching vases have been converted into modern table lamps, both fully re-wired with a 2 metre brown twisted flex and meeting the UK safety requirements. Both lamps have also been fitted with B22 bulb holders and have been supplied with a drum linen shades. This pair of lamps would compliment any modern home especially a living room or dining room - not only offering light but a story.
