These gorgeous serving plates originated in China in the early 20th century. They are made from a mix of wood and copper. They have a lovely circle shape, and they all have their original lacquer and have hand-painted illustrations which are unique to each plate. Each plate also has their makers mark on the back.
Plate 1: This plate has a lovely simple design. Around the edges there are multiple images of flowers which symbolise prosperity, wealth and good fortune. There is also an image of a violin which represents tranquillity and fragility.
Dimensions: H - 5.5cm, D - 33cm, W - 33cm.
Plate 2: This plate has a unique wavy shape around the edges with yellow flowers which symbolise good fortune and prosperity. There a also hand-painted yellow leaves around the inside. This is truly a quality plate.
Dimensions: H - 9cm, D - 35.5cm, W - 35.5cm.
Plate 3: This plate has a stunning red colour around the outside which highlights the painted image in the centre. In the early 20th century, it was common for Chinese men of high authority to have concubines as well as a wife. This hand-painted image could be depicting a man with his concubine and his wife who looks very displeased.
Dimensions: H - 5cm, D - 33cm, W - 33cm.
Plate 4: This plate has a stunning golden pattern around the bottom. The main painted image could be of an Emperor or someone of high authority as one figure in particular is dressed in very traditionally wealthy clothes and there are people bowing to him too.
Dimensions: H - 6.5cm, D - 30.5cm, W - 30.5cm.
Plate 5: This plate has a beautiful painted illustration of three figures within a wealthy garden setting. The symbolism of the gold paint and their clothes conveys the traditional wealth that is being shown.
Dimensions: H - 6cm, D - 27.5cm, W - 27.5cm.
Plate 6: This particular plate does not have any painted images of figures but of plants and flowers. The illustrations are in black which adds to the subtlety and simplicity of this plate. There is also an image of a butterfly which, in Chinese culture, symbolises longevity.
Dimensions: H - 6cm, D - 31cm, W - 31cm.
Plate 7: This final plate has a very simple design but still showcases quality through the gold paint and robustness of the plate.
Dimensions: H - 5.5cm, D - 32.5cm, W - 32.5cm.
