Here we have a stunning, antique Chinese calligraphy table, dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1840's). This traditional piece, crafted from elm wood, would have served as the centrepiece of a scholars studio. These tables are built wide, long and deep to accommodate large rolls of rice paper or heavy silk scrolls without creasing or hanging awkwardly off the edge. Constructed using mortise-and-tenon joinery, the legs, stretchers and apron self-lock in place, allowing the wood to naturally expand and contract with environmental changes. Glancing at the legs, the artisan has employed a classical Ming-styled recessed-leg design where the legs are set slightly inward from the edge of the tabletop compared to a standard table. The original lacquer has gradually eroded away over time, leaving the calligraphy table with a beautiful, raw patina. This is a very versatile antique that would compliment any modern home, particularly reproposed as a striking console table or a statement coffee table.
