Here we have a beautiful Chinese console/alter table, dating back to the Qing dynasty (1912-1949). Constructed from Chinese elm (Yumu), prized for its durability, this piece reflects the aesthetic transition between the Ming and Qing dynasty. The delicate, geometric fretwork on the apron of the table is highly characteristic of the Qing dynasty as the time period shifted towards more elaborate craftsmanship and complex ornamentation, while the Ming dynasty utilized architectural simplicity (similar to art deco). Traditionally crafted using mortise-and-tenon joinery (without the use of nails) the joiners where able to create a smooth seamless finish which was highly favoured even in todays society. The original dark lacquer has been stripped/heavily weathered away exposing the raw elm as well as structural splitting along the top panel adding to its authenticity - we have added brass staples to the top panel to keep it secure. Historically, these pieces carry deep spiritual significance in Chinese culture, as the alter table served as the social and religious axis of the household. Whether used for ancestor worship (a space dedicated to a lost loved one), offerings or used in a scholars study.
The dimensions are as follows: L 98cm by D48cm by H74cm
