Here we have a traditional Japanese Chagama kettle dating back to the mid 20th century. This specific kettle has a low, rounded “satogata” (village-styled) body with a broad, stable base. The surface shows a naturally aged, coarse “hada” (skin) texture, which is characteristic of sand-cast iron. This stunning piece displays three strong features, the finial which resembles a small fruit or flower, the tall overhead wrought iron handle and the short curved spout - designed for a steady, controlled pour. Taking a closer look at the exterior you can see detailed illustrations of bamboo which in Japanese culture represents resilience (“bending but no breaking”). The kettle has a heavy, dark patina with prominent areas of surface oxidisation. This distressed look is often valued in antique pieces for its “wai-sabi”, the beauty of imperfection and the passage of time. This kettle would make an amazing statement piece for any modern home - particularly the kitchen or living room. Alternatively this piece could be used as a unique way to store small household items or used as a decorative vessel for dried floral arrangements.
