Description
Dating back to the early 20th century, this beautiful Turkish copper Ottoman water jug exemplifies a classic form, characterised by its bell-shaped conical body, elongated neck, and sweeping loop handle. These vessels, known historically as "güğums," were staples of domestic life across the Ottoman Empire from the 18th to the early 20th century. Used daily to carry and store water from communal fountains or rivers, their durable, thick copper construction also allowed them to be placed directly over open flames to heat water for household chores, tea, or coffee. This piece showcases exceptional handcrafted technique; skilled coppersmiths manually hammered flat copper sheets over shaped anvils, joined the sections with traditional interlocking brazed seams, and lined the interior with molten tin. This unique historical piece would complement a modern interior, offering a striking rustic accent or a unique flower vase.
