Here we have a stunning Zenibako (merchants money box), dating back to the Meiji Period. Constructed from solid Japanese Zelkova and fortified with iron plating, this piece features a coin slot and a circular hole on top, the coin slot was used for quick deposits and the larger was used for string-tied currency. Along the perimeter of the money box you may notice heavy iron rivets (studs) this design feature was a security measure making it difficult for thieves to smash open the box. Historically money boxes were used by merchants, shopkeepers and homeowners during the Edo and Meiji periods to securely store coins, daily earnings and important documents. Today this money box could be reproposed as a home office safe or a unique side table.
