Description

This beautiful, hand-carved depiction of an Ambari elephant dates back to the late 19th century. Crafted from native Indian rosewood during the British Raj period, the piece features extraordinary, deep-relief details. To create this mesmerizing effect - designed explicitly to captivate both royal courts and European high society - Indian master carvers utilized specialized tools like gouges alongside intricate techniques such as "undercutting," "multi-block assembly," and "Jali" fretwork to hollow out the wood and establish a sense of depth and realism. Historically, the sculpture depicts a traditional Ambari elephant used in royal processions, complete with a driver (mahout) seated directly on the neck and a ceremonial carriage box behind him. A closer look reveals an upward-looping trunk, a traditional Indian symbol of good fortune and blessing. Highly prized as luxury items for wealthy Indian families, these sculptures were equally coveted as exotic decorative souvenirs by European travellers and colonial officers. The figure stands on an integrated plinth meticulously shaped to follow the curve of the trunk and tail, ensuring stability for its top-heavy frame. Please note that the sculpture shows some age-related wear, including a missing tail, a missing piece from the base, hands missing from the mahout, and only one remaining tusk. This unique piece would compliment any modern home serving as a high-contrast statement piece.
