These gorgeous serving plates originated in China in the early 20th century. They are made from a mix of wood and copper. They have a lovely octagon shape, which is often associated with good luck and prosperity, and they all have their original lacquer and have hand-painted illustrations which are unique to each plate. Each plate also has their makers mark on the back.
Plate 1: This plate has a hand-painted image of what could be depicted as a warrior and his general. This is conveyed by the weaponry and wealth that is seen within the picture.
Dimensions: H - 7cm, D - 37.5cm, W - 37cm.
Plate 2: Unfortunately, due to age of this plate, majority of the painted image has gone. However, what we can make out is that there were two figures who were potentially stood on a balcony.
Dimensions: H - 6.5cm, D - 38cm, W - 38cm.
Plate 3: This scene shows three figures all holding weapons which could suggest that they are mercenaries or soldiers who are within a building setting.
Dimensions: H - 7.5cm, D - 36cm, W - 36cm.
Plate 4: Unfortunately, there has been some wear on this plate and the three figures can not be identified. But the background seems to be on a balcony.
Dimensions: H - 5cm, D - 32.5cm, W - 32.5cm.
Plate 5: This plate has a unique pattern around the centre and within the centre there seem to be 3 figures who are making offerings to each other.
Dimensions: H - 9.5cm, D - 32.5m, W - 32.5cm.
Plate 6: This plate has a beautiful garden background. There are three figures present: there is a woman and a young boy could represent a mother and son. There is also another woman who is approaching them and reaching out to them. This could symbolise family which is hold very highly in Chinese culture.
Dimensions: H - 7cm, D - 38cm, W - 38cm.
