Here we have a beautiful Japanese Bizen ware flower vase with its original signed box, dating back to the mid 20th century (Showa Era). Traditionally a bizen-yaki would have been specifically for Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangement) often gifted for decorating tea ceremony rooms. The ceramic vase (Bizen-Yaki) has a classic bulbous silhouette featuring a wide, rounded base that tapers into a slender asymmetrical neck and flared rim, made from iron-rich stoneware originating from the Okayama Prefecture. The vase is purposefully unglazed as air permeability helps to keep the water fresh, preventing early stem rotting as well as the natural tones providing the optimal foundation to highlight the floral stems. The wooden box is made from kiribako, a carefully selected wood as it acts as a natural moisture regulators, protecting the ceramic inside. The calligraphy on the lid translates to "Flower vase" (central main text) alongside the artisans name and signature followed by the kilns stamp. This piece would compliment any modern home, it could be repurposed however its original purpose would be ideal.
