Here we have a stunning, traditional Japanese street vendors stool, dating back to the late 1920's. Constructed entirely out of Japanese pine, the surface shows an authentic, darkened patina with numerous surface scuffs highlighting a century of active utilitarian use. A flat, thick overhanging pine plank serves as the primary seating surface or a small counter platform. The wide lower base features an integrated storage bin or open compartment which would have been used to store the shops essentials. The open-topped bay is enclosed by high angled side panels and a protective front lip to keep loose items secure. Historically, these stools where designed for mobile merchants who carried their entire shops on their shoulders through the busy streets of Japan. Tradesmen ranging from knife sharpeners, cobblers to food sellers needed not only compact gear that served multi purpose but a stool that acted as a mobile workspace, storage and a seat. This piece would compliment any modern home particularly repurposed as a functional accent piece or a unique side table.
