Mid 19th Century Shanxi Region Black Opera Chest

This stunning Chinese trunk originated in the north of China, specifically the Shanxi region, in the mid 19th century. It is made from a mixture of hardwoods including elm, which gives it its robustness whilst also making it light enough to be easily portable. Unfortunately, this trunk does not hold all of its original metalwork, and the hinges have had to be replaced. However, this does not take away from the rustic beauty that this chest holds. There are also some age related marks around the chest. The quality of this chest is truly encapsulated in the artwork on the front with the various colours and patterns used. Also, the hand-painted illustrations on the front seem to showcase a scene from traditional Chinese opera known as Xiqu.

This chest was originally used by Chinese travelling operas for carrying clothes and props. Nowadays however, it can be used as a beautifully unique storage space in your home!
