This stunning piece is known as a Sake bottle and it originated in Japan, dating back to the Late Meiji era to the early Taisho era. Historically used as a reusable stoneware bottle that traditionally held sake (Japanese alcoholic beverage) with the merchants name or location written on, ensuring the bottle was returned to the correct merchant. The vast majority of these bottles are crafted from kiln-fired clay, often finished with a feldspar glaze which gives the bottle an almost ivory/grey appearance.
