This stunning Chinese polychrome pottery figure of a dog dates back to the Han Dynasty, from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. Known as mingqi, or spirit objects, such figurines were placed in tombs to serve, protect, and provide companionship to the deceased in the afterlife. Sculpted from grey earthenware, its exterior displays extensive, age-related degradation, beautifully preserved under a thick layer of encrusted soil, calcification, and burial patina. Today, this ancient artifact makes a striking focal point in a modern home, offering a captivating contrast between raw, textured antiquity and clean, contemporary interior design.
