Here we have a beautiful, 19th century, lebrillo handmade in the southern regions of Spain. This lebrillo has a stunning conical, flared silhouette that tapers sharply from a wide, open rim down to a narrow flat, base. The interior surface is coated in a thick olive green glaze over a series of pronounced, concentric ridges. These distinct throwing rings were left by the potters fingers as the heavy clay was spun on the wheel. The outer body consist of raw, unglazed terracotta clay, displaying a weathered, pale peach and tan colouration with natural dark variations and smudges. It is worth noting that the exterior does have metal staples on either side, an authentic way to repair damaged ceramics. The rim features a thick rounded lip coated in a darker forest green glaze that runs slightly down the top edges of the exterior walls. Historically, these bowls where a staple in rural kitchens, typically passed down generations, used for cleaning produce, curing olives and preparing large batches of dough. Overall, there is notable frictional wear, chipping and exposed raw clay as well as the interior having fine cracking lines indicators of age and generations of active kitchen use. This lebrillo would compliment any modern home, particularly repurposed as a fire place log holder or a stylish planter.
