This antique Japanese Isho-Dansu bedside chest dates from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) and would have been used for clothing storage. With five drawers and a small door opening to reveal drawers inside the money box this is a very practical chest of drawers.
And nearly all Tansu were made to be easily portable and to store in Kura (fireproof storehouses) In case a fire brakes out.
The finish on this Tansu is Shou Sugi Ban. This is the process of burning the timber then waxing to create a preserved finish. Other than it's practical side, it gives this beautiful grainy black gloss to the surface.
Its a timeless piece and will look amazing in the modern or tradition home.
The dimensions of this Tansu chest are as follows- H - 43.5cm, L - 62cm, W - 33cm.
