Mid 19th Century Single Shanxi Elm Armchair

The old black lacquer finish on this impressive chair has worn and weathered over the years to reveal the paler elm wood underneath, resulting in a lovely patina and character. The chair is from Shanxi and is in a high-backed 'Southern Official' style, with the curved arms ending to meet the front supporting posts and the top rail fitted flush to the side posts. The shallow curved back rest features a rectangular geometric floral pattern in carved relief. The chair was produced in Shanxi province and the style, with a sharply curved top rail, is typical of the region. It would originally have been made as one of a pair, but has been separated from its twin over time.
