🧡Traditional Orange Striped Kokeshi Dolls🧡

The age of Kokeshi Doll’s go back as far as 150 years. Most of Kokeshi Dolls are made from either dogwood, cherry or maple. Made in two pieces, the head and the body, the craftsman creates the head with a stem-plug that is forced into a tight hole above the shoulders. The dolls shape are minimal, no arms or legs etc, but whilst they may seem simple the process of making one is extensive; seasoning the wood, splitting into quarters for the lathe, rough cutting, fine cutting, sanding, painting, waxing and polishing. And, depending on where in Japan the doll is made, this will also dictate that shape and decor of the doll. For instance how the doll is painted, or how the shoulders slope, if the body is wide or narrow etc.

These specific dolls have a stunning, practically untouched, orange and grey striped hand-painted body, with orange flowers painted in the middle. In Chinese culture, orange flowers symbolise warmth and vitality. They also have quaint little faces and deep black hair. Traditionally used as children’s toys, they make a great decoration point in the modern home, especially in a group.

The dimensions of this doll are as follows: H - 31cm, W - 5.5cm at base, 6cm on head.

PRICE IS FOR INDIVIDUAL DOLLS - YOU WILL RECEIVE ONE AT RANDOM.

👘Mid 19th Century Japanese Shunkei Lacquer Tansu👘

This interesting piece is a Japanese tansu which originated during the Meiji period. What makes this tansu unique is the shunkei lacquer which gives it that lovely orange colour, and the fact that it has all of its original ironwork. Due to the age of it, we have had to add an oak brace to each draw to protect the tansu. There has also been some worm damage, but we have stabilised that issue.

This tansu has handles which originally would have been used to thread a pole through and then carry using the pole. The tansu was made to be light weight and easily moveable just in case people needed to make a quick getaway from their homes. Originally, this tansu would have been used to hold daily domestic items, nowadays it can be used for the same purpose!

The dimensions are as follows: H - 105cm, W - 90cm, D - 41cm.
