This beautiful collectors cabinet originated in China within the late 19th century. The quality of this box can be seen through the artistry that is showcased throughout. The doors have hand-painted illustrations of Geishas standing within an outdoor landscape. On the right hand side, the Geisha is standing tall and looking directly at us. This could reflect her authoritarian role and power that she holds through her beauty. On the left hand side, the Geisha is focusing on her meditation which conveys her peaceful and gentle nature. These contrasting ideas outline how it is to be a Geisha.
The cabinet is made from a mixture of Chinese hardwoods, including rosewood, and it has its original metal, hand-carved handles. The true uniqueness of this cabinet lies inside as it contains 8 drawers, all with handles that are repurposed hinges. This small cabinet would have originally been used for export purposes.
Nowadays however, it can be used to store trinkets or jewellery within your home.
